Good Hiring Skills are needed for a great law practice

Hiring Well
Having a great law practice means having the work you delegate handled the way you want it to be handled and better than you could do some things yourself. What you can do to make that happen is choose or hire the right person.

I’ve worked with many clients that unfortunately wait until their need to hire is so great they are too busy to do what is necessary to make a good long term hire. That often results in the person they hire not working out. That means difficulties letting them go, fixing their mistakes, living with their mistakes, etc.

My Law Practice Tip this week is
“Being a good delegator means hiring well
Hiring well means putting in the time and thought to find someone with the appropriate skills, talents, and principles that match your needs and principles.”

Have a hiring plan that answer these kinds of questions will help you hire well:

  • What do you want your new hire to do? Short term contract legal work? Administrative stuff? Book-keeping? Become a partner that will take over your practice in the future?
  • What do you think their experience should be?
  • What are your expectations for the new hire?
  • When should you hire?
  • What skills or talent do they need?
  • What kind of person should they be?
  • How will you know they have those skills?
  • How will you find someone?
  • How will you interview them?
  • What kinds of questions will you ask?
  • What kinds of tests will you have them complete?
  • When will you interview them?
  • Who else will interview them?
  • How many references will you check out?
  • How will you decide they are right for what you want?

The above is not a complete list of questions. But it gives you an idea that it’s important to think through what you want and how to get what you want.
